Gorayeb steps down as Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Coach

After five years, Roger Gorayeb
stepped down as head coach of the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team.
In a conversation with Gorayeb, the
veteran coach who has Lebanese origins explained that it wasn’t exactly a
resignation but more of a leave of a leave of absence. “Tignan na lang natin
after one year,” said the coach. “Napapabayaan ko na rin ang San Sebastian. Siguro
dapat bumalik din ako sa alma mater ko na sobrang supportive sa akin lalo na
itong mga huling panahon na ‘to.”
Gorayeb’s contract with Ateneo expired
last March 31 but he continued to call the shots for the Ateneo Lady Eagles in
the recent V-League tournament that saw them unable to defend their crown to
National University.
Is money a concern? “Not only
financial pero marami,” bared the coach. His son, Karl Fredreich, is a freshman
at the Ateneo High School with a partial scholarship. He will need to earn a
little more than what he is paid for coaching the college team if he is to be
able to pay the tuition fee.
His assistant, Parley Tupaz is set to
take over from him.
Gorayeb walks away after leading the
Lady Eagles to two V-League titles and two UAAP finals appearances. “I asked
for five years and although meron tayong narating medyo short din,” he said referring
to the second place finishes to La Salle in the last two seasons.
He joined the team the same year that
the Fab Five of Ateneo – Fille Cainglet, Dzi Gervacio, Gretchen Ho, Jem Ferrer,
and A Nacachi – entered as freshmen. “Hindi naman pinagusapan yun,” the coach
laughed. “Nagkataon lang.”
Gorayeb served a one-year suspension
from the NCAA for his involvement in a brawl at San Beda with Red Lions players
after an altercation with one of San Sebastian’s men’s volleyballers.

Personally, I feel that the coaches are vastly underpaid. Not just volleyball but all sports except basketball. Imagine even the Ateneo Men's Football Team... they lost their two assistant coaches from last season (coach Ryan went to UE while Joecil went back to Romblon) because the pay is incredibly low. Ah, sports fund?

It's not Ateneo who funds the Basketball Team and most of the teams like Volleyball,Baseball and Football. The Basketball Team ( and the staff) is funded by MVP. Other teams are funded by other alumni, businessmen, businesses and anonymous donors.

ReplyDeletewho gives half a scholarship? they should have given a full one instead as long as he doesn't fail.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever applied for one? There are so many types of scholarships and trying to get a full one is very cut throat.
Deletei think they should raise the salaries of the coaches. :/ many of them devote so much and get so little in return.
