The University Athletics Association of the Philippines suspended National University assistant coach Vic Ycasiano for one match for throwing an elbow to University of the East center Charles Mammie during the match between the two teams last Saturday, July 6 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Red Warriors won the game 71-67.

At the 1:26 mark of the fourth period, Ycasiano extended an elbow to the face of Mammie who appeared to be resting about a foot away from the NU bench. While the match officials did not catch this, it did not escape the eyes of tournament officials who sat directly across the NU bench.

Through an official memorandum dated July 8, 2013 by league Commissioner Joaquin Loyzaga, Ycasiano was found to have been in violation of the rules and regulations Item VI: Discipline of Players/Officials, Section B: “It shall be the responsibility of the concerned Tournament Commissioner to impose such sanctions and see to it that such an incident is duly recorded and signed by the official concerned.”

In paragraph three, it is stated that “Any coach, trainer, or team manager who fails to observe the rules of conduct and discipline and the true spirit of sportsmanship may be penalized. The extent of the penalty or sanction shall be determined by the Board.”

Ycasiano’s suspension will take effect in NU’s next match that is today against the undefeated University of Santo Tomas at 4pm at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
