Loyola XI crushes Flame Utd., 8-0

Loyola flexed their muscles and in
doing so crushed a hopelessly overmatched Flame United, 8-0, in their opening
match of the Smart Club Championships at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium last Saturday, January 12.
The Sparks cut to pieces Flame United,
a team composed of former Dolphins United (who are Philippine Christian
University footballers) and Arellano University players with some loaned out
Air Force players, with the rule of the midfield and crisp diagonal passing.
Matthew Hartmann back in uniform
following a year-long suspension by the Philippine Football Federation scored a
hat trick and didn’t seem to miss a beat despite the layoff. “I was just glad
to get back and play,” glowed Hartmann who occupied the slot of holding
midfielder Anto Gonzales who returned to Pachanga-Diliman after he was recalled
from his season-long loan to Loyola. “It was good to contribute and this result
will help not only the team but my confidence.”
It was an all brother affair as
Hartmann’s younger brother, Mark, continued his recent resurgence and strong
play by scoring the opening two goals for Loyola beginning with a brilliant
free kick from 25 yards out that beat keeper Bernard Lelis in the 17th
minute.
There was a tense moment when old
nemesis, Herbert Bayona, on loan from Air Force, kicked Loyola’s Roxy Dorlas in
the shins causing the Sparks’ defender to crash down in pain. The Loyola
players angrily pointed at Bayona who they remember for his rough play during
the intense battle with the military team in the UFL. Dorlas was replaced by PJ
Fadrigalan.
Eight minutes the opening goal, Mark
Hartmann headed in a high cross by Chad Gould from the right side of the box to
double Loyola’s lead.
In the 38th minute, it was
the Younghusband brothers turn to take the spotlight when Phil Younghusband set
up James for a thunderous volley from outside the box to make it 3-0.
At the resumption of play, Loyola
midfielder Byeong Yeol Jeong beat defender Carl Arañez deep in Flame United
territory to send a cross that Mathew Hartmann headed home past Perry Camba Jr.
who replaced Lelis at goal. Hartmann’s goal made it 4-nil as Flame United coach
Ravelo “Judy” Saluria, a former national player, shuffled his players hoping to stem the tide.
In the 67th minute, Phil
Younghusband, now playing in a midfield position with Hartmann and Chad Gould
moving up forward, followed up his shot that Camba stopped but was unable to
corral with a right-footed blast to hike the score to 5-0.

Matthew with a well-played back heel pass that the latter dribbled in once for
a better position before firing into the far post where Camba had no chance.
Six-nil for Loyola.
Phil Younghusband slalomed through two
defenders in the 76th minute and his glorious right foot gave him a
brace with another cracking shot and a now ridiculous 7-0 lead.
Matthew Hartmann closed out the match
and comeback with his third goal in the 86th minute.
In other Smart Club Championship play,
General Trias, the recently-concluded UFL Cup revelation, defeated Baguio FC,
3-1, at Benguet State University. Green Archers United crushed Ramgarjal, 6-1,
at the Rizal Memorial State University Field in Capitan City with new
acquisition Chiefly Caligdong scoring a brace. And in the last match of last
Saturday, Pachanga-Diliman slipped past Queen City United at the Aboitiz Field
in Cebu.
