UFL Tuesday: Army vs. Air Force & Loyola vs. Nomads

Blood warfare: Army vs. Air Force/Loyola vs. Nomads

The battle is rejoined.

Air Force and Army battled to a pair of 2-2 draws last league. In both matches, Air Force scored first with Army securing the draw after a late score.

They may be branches of the Philippine military and their players may be from the provinces of Iloilo and Bacolod but that’s where the similarities end. When both clubs step on that Rizal Memorial Football Stadium pitch on at 5:15pm on Tuesday, October 23, they will be looking to knock each other out.

Army has been seething every since Air Force defeated them in the UFL Cup of three years ago. In their next meeting, the match was abandoned after a donnybrook broke out on the pitch.

With both squads bracketed together in Group D of the 2012 UFL Cup, a win puts them in the prime position to advance. One thing is for sure, this is not going to be a “beautiful game” as both teams will go hard against one another. It’s inter-service and hometown bragging rights.

Another team seeing red is the Loyola Meralco Sparks. After taking it on the chin, 2-1, against newly promoted Pachanga, Loyola is raring to get back into the win column. Standing in their way is Nomads who they last time they met cost Loyola the league title when Steven Borrill scored a stunning goal in the 90th minute to level the match at 2-2. That match saw Loyola further drop points that allowed Kaya and Global to move past them in the standings.

Nomads knows a thing about late stunners as they also defeated Pachanga 1-0 last Tuesday at the Marikina Sports Center. Currently toting a 2-0-0 record, Nomads, will head into the match still not without their full lineup. But expect them to play Loyola with the same defensive intensity they showed against Pachanga.

Loyola will be without midfielder Davide Cortina who sustained a knee injury in the last match while Nomads will be without midfielder Phil Connolly who is out with two yellow cards.

Match time for these two clubs in Group C is at 7:15pm.
