Twenty-eight teams to vie for 2012 UFL Cup

The first stage of the 2012 United Football League Cup kicks off Monday, September 17, with 16 teams vying for a spot in the group stages of the tournament where 12 other football squads await.

Participating in the qualifiers are eight of the UFL’s Division Two teams – Forza, Internacionale, Team Socceroo, Manila All-Japan, Union Internacional Manila, Laos, Dolphins United, and Agila – and eight guest squads – International Ph, General Trias International, Sta. Lucia, Primero Atletico Cavite, Blue Guards, Bright Star, Mendiola, and Masbate.

UFL Division Two teams will have the twice-to-beat advantage and each game must be played to a final score including extra time and penalties. Once a Division Two teams beats a guest club they will be out of the competition.

The fixtures are scheduled from the 17th-20th of September and will be played at the University of Makati.

The teams that qualify for the group stages will join the UFL’s Division One Teams in the main draw for the group stages that will be conducted on September 24. The venue for the draw will be announced next week.

The UFL’s Division One teams include last year’s champions Global, Kaya, Loyola, Stallion, Air Force, Pasargad, Nomads, Green Archers United, Army, Pachanga, as well as the top two Second Division squads Navy and Diliman.

During the draw, there will be four groups of five. The first seeds are Global, Kaya, Loyola, and Stallion and will be in one bowl. The second seeds, also in one bowl, include Air Force, Pasargad, Nomads, and Green Archers United. The third seeds, Army, Pachanga, Navy, and Diliman will be in another bowl.

The succeeding stages are as follows:
Quarterfinals - November 8 and 9
Semifinals on November 13
Finals on November 15.

The venues for the group stages will be announced during the main draw.

  1. Twice to beat? I think that unfair to the non-UFL team & it sucks. They shouldve put it on a two leg game.
