At the end of the great World War II
epic Saving Private Ryan, actor Tom Hanks’ character of Captain Miller, who is
mortally wounded pulls a soldier played by actor Matt Damon close to him. With
his dying breath, Miller tells Ryan, “Earn this.”
Fortunately the over 300 basketball
players plying their trade in the NBA, their “wars” are fought on the
hardcourt. As for respect, as Miller said, it is earned.
