Junior Archers make roadkill out of Bullpups for first round sweep

Junior Archers make roadkill out of Bullpups for first round sweep

It took a quarter for the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers to get their game going but once they did, they stepped on the gas pedal to blow out a National University 69-52 squad that was going in five different directions. The lopsided win gave Boris Aldeguer’s team a first round sweep of the Juniors Division while its closest pursuer, three-time defending champions Ateneo de Manila fell to two games back after UST dropped them with a buzzer-bating trey.

NU’s Ralph Tansingco gave DLSZ early fits as he asserted his way inside the paint but relentless pressure by the Junior Archers on the Bullpups guards prevented the ball from going back inside the paint. Tansingco never scored again.

So relentless was the pressure defense that La Salle forced NU into 24 turnovers that was converted into 25 points (in contrast the Junior Archers only committed nine turnovers). The first round leader also outscored their foe 11-4 in fastbreak points.

Zobel’s dynamic duo of Alex Torres and Gab Reyes each scored 14 points on a variety of pull-ups, fadeaways, and layups flustering their Bullpup defenders.

National University was led by Raph Atangan and Paul Baliton who each scored 15 and 12 points respectively but many of their points like the rest of their teammates’ output were the result of one-on-one forays. NU coach Jeff Napa tried to dig deep into his bench and although they added 22 markers, it wasn’t enough as all 11 Juniors Archers sent in by Aldeguer scored at least a bucket with the bench chipping in huge 33 points.

“Medyo hindi nakayanan,” said Napa. “Masyadong malalim yung team ng Zobel.”

The two teams each hauled down 58 boards but Aldeguer’s boys pulled out the stops in the other statistical departments from assists (17-11), steals (8-3), second chance points (16-6), and fastbreak points (11-4).

“I’m happy with the way my team took the challenge,” said Aldeguer who has led his alma mater to two juniors titles. “We like our record but there’s still another round to go and anything can happen. At this point, we’d like to make sure that we come out focused for every game.”
