Cam Sur Friday August 12

Took an Air Philippines DeHavilland prop plane to Naga. Kind of thankful that I took a plane. Imagine, it’s an eight-hour drive from Manila to CamSur so the 50-minute plane ride is a most convenient thing since I never liked long rides and flights.

Arriving at Naga Airport (I hope they fixed the comfort rooms in the departure area), it was a treat for the foreigners participating in the third installment of the Ironman 70.3 Philippines to be serenaded by a marching band and a dance troupe. One of them hung a “native garland” on me as if I was a returning hero. I mouthed an old Mel Brooks line, “It’s good to be the king.” Bwhahaha.

The ride to the Camarines Sur Water Complex is a short one and I could feel a wave of excitement envelop me. So I’m here to cover the race now imagine what it must be like for participants.

My GroupM colleague Ton Gatmaitan got up real early and ran for about an hour. It was scorching hot at that time, he said as we met up in my cabin. If the weather stays the same, the heat is going to be murder on those of the tail end of the race. Said my esteemed colleague, "Hide the women and children! Break out the bikinis and don't forget your Gatorade!" Now that's a shameless plug, effendi.

In the picture below, it's the Timex Triathlon team (newly sponsored by Gatorade). Am here hanging out at the Gatorade tent and the media center. Will check back later.
