UAAP All-stars win Bantay Bata showdown

The UAAP All-Stars defeated their NCAA counterparts, 90-76, last Saturday, November 13, 2010, in the annual 2010 Bantay Bata 163 UAAP-NCAA All-Star Games at the San Juan Arena.

UE Red Warriors’ hotshot Paul Lee was adjudged the MVP of the game for his team high 14 points. Lee also compiled three rebounds and three assists.

The NCAA All-stars were without Season 86 MVP Sudan Daniel who was out with a groin injury but they nevertheless paraded a taller line-up. Incredibly though, the UAAP players outrebounded them 52-42.

The event featured the Juniors All-Star game, the Father-Son/Nephew 2-Ball competition, Three-point shootout and the highlight of the event, the Seniors All-Star game. The affair was covered by ABS-CBN Sports and aired live on Studio 23.

The UAAP All-stars, coached by Ateneo’s Norman Black, threatened to blow out their NCAA rivals as they posted a 16-point lead early in the game. But the NCAA team, mentored by San Beda assistant coach Ed Cordero, rallied to within four points 65-61 at the close of the third quarter. But Ateneo’s Nico Salva bridged the final two quarters with an eight-point splurge to restore order to his side. The UAAP All-stars coasted from there on.

In other events for the Bantay Bata festivities, the NCAA Juniors All-Stars outsteadied their UAAP Juniors counterparts 85-81 with San Beda Red Cub Baser Amer showing the way with 14 points.

Kiefer Ravena scored 30 points for the UAAP Juniors All-Stars in their losing effort but he exited the Arena with a victory in the Father-Son 2-Ball challenge where he teamed up with his father, former pro player and UE Warrior Bong to score 57 points in the skills challenge.

JRU’s Nate Matute won the three-point shootout.
