Smart Gilas in a do-or-die match

Smart Gilas will be playing Chinese Taipei in a do-or-die match tonight (Monday evening). With a 2-2 record, the Nationals must beat Taiwan (1-3) if they want to advance to the quarterfinals. The problem facing Gilas is that they are playing with a 10-man rotation with Japeth Aguilar out with a knee injury while Sol Mercado has had foot problems.

Team Philippines beat India 78-57 last night at the  Yingdong Gymnasium after a mighty third quarter where they outscored the Indians 32-11.

The nationals are familiar with the Taiwanese team who they beat 94-84 in the last Jones Cup. The hitch is they beat them with American reinforcement Marcus Douthit in tow. Without Douthit and missing two key players, Gilas will have to play doubly hard if they want to advance. A loss means they will be relegated to the consolation round while Taipei will advance because of the winner-over-the-loser rule (they will both be 2-3).

The match doesn't look to get any easier as the Taiwanese nearly beat Iran as they lost 72-73.

Here are the scores in the last match by Smart Gilas:

Philippines 78Casio 18, Tiu 13, Taulava 10, Lutz 10, Barroca 8, Williams 7, Baracel 6, Slaughter 4, Lassiter 2, Ballesteros 0

India 57J. Singh 14, Bhriguvanshi 10, Y. Singh 10, Pereira 6, Shan 6, Mishra 6, Koroth 2, Coimbatore 2, Rathee 1, K. Singh 0, Jat 0
