The Adamson Falcons sent the San Sebastian Stags packing from the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Champions League 65-54 yesterday at the San Juan Arena.

The Falcons took advantage of San Sebastian’s lean bench that was minus Calvin Abueva, Ronald Pascual, Jonathan Semira, and Dave Najorda. There were rumors of discontent floating around he Arena where it is said that the Pineda family that has been supporting the Stags’ basketball team for the last several years has pulled out. How that affects Abueva’s continued presence with the team is anyone’s guess at this point as he was said to be back in his hometown of Pampanga.

The match was close for three quarters until Adamson rode the three-point shooting of Janus Lozada and Lester Alvarez who nailed four and three treys in the second half. Falcons head coach Leo Austria said that his team was rusty from their long lay-off and they were fortunate to have their outside shots fall in considering they hardly had any points inside the paint (22-36) as they were outrebounded (46-60) by the smaller Stags line up.

Coached by Enrico Gascon who once donned the jersey of FEU in the UAAP, the Stags fought gamely on and came within a basket of Adamson at 49-51 but the Faclons dropped a 14-5 windup in the last eight minutes for the win. The Falcons advance to play FEU in the quarterfinals. “It was a sloppy game,” said Austria. “But that was to be expected.”

Gilbert Bulawan led the Stags with 17 points and 12 boards but the loss marked the last time that point guard John Murphy “Pamboy” Raymundo will wear a San Sebastian jersey. “At least naka isang championship,” said Raymundo who was disappointed that his team didn’t advance to the next round. “Sana makuha ako sa PBA.”

Raymundo finished with zero points as he missed all eight of his attempts. But he was able to pull down three rebounds and pass of for six assists.

Lozada led Adamson with 21 points while Alvarez, who caught fire in the final frame, had 15.
