The Most Valuable Player Award for both the seniors and juniors division in the NCAA will be disputed by a San Beda Red Lion and a San Sebastian Stag in this 86th Season of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
In the men’s division, the choice will come down to two men -- San Beda College’s Sudan Daniel or San Sebastian College’s Calvin Abueva.
The 6’7” Daniel who is in his second year with the Red Lions tallied 10.9 points, 11.4 rebounds (second), and 4.4 blocks (tops) per game.
Abueva who stands a mere 6’3” averaged 16.3 points (third), 12.6 rebounds (tops), and 1.6 asissts, 1.0 steal, and 1.0 blocks per game.
Even if the Stags finished the season with a 13-3 record, Abueva’s all-around brilliance gives him a strong chance to bag the award.
Last season, Jimbo Aquino was leading the MVP race but was not given the award when he received a suspension. The MVP Award eventually went to JRU’s John Wilson.
Over at the juniors’ division, it comes down to either the San Beda Red Cub’s Baser Amer or the San Sebastian Staglet’s Gino Jumao-as. Amer averaged 15.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 11.7 assists, and 2.4 steals while Jumao-as compiled 23.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 shot blocks.
