The FEU Tamaraws held the UP Maroons scores in a seven-minute span to take control of the match. The Maroons had three turnovers and gave up five offensive rebounds to the Tamaraws who used to occasion to score 17 unanswered points for a 24-8 lead. The Maroons’ Alvin Padilla finally broke the silence with two free throws that also woke up his side that then went on a 10-4 run.
But with only two players keeping UP in the fight, it was another double-digit thrashing 70-48.
After the first three games of the season, Sison has thrived under coach Boyet Fernandez. In the Maroons’ first round encounter with FEU, Sison gave fellow Smart Gilas teammate Al Ramos a difficult time. He even blocked Al’s shot at one point. With him in the middle, he clogs up the lane and there aren’t easy baskets. If opponents do get inside that’s because the perimeter defense has been horrible.
I wanted to verify my theory so I consulted Pong Ducanes, the stats guy and Sison it turns out is at #12 in the player rankings with 10.9 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 1.8 bpg on 44% shooting.
Against FEU yesterday, he shot 54% from the field 14 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots.
Happy for the Big Fella who is one of my closest friends on Gilas.
Next Saturday when the Fighting Maroons take on the UE Red Warriors at 2pm, several players (and coaches?) will be saying goodbye.
It’s the final game for Magi Sison, Woody Co, and Martin Reyes for UP. As for the Red Warriors, it’s the last for Ken Rosopa, Raphy Reyes, and… Paul Lee?
