Thierry Henry is a New York Red Bull

Allez!

Thierry Henry arrives as the newest player for the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.

Some might dismiss the move as akin to moving into a retirement home as his career in Europe is over. But MLS has been getting better over the years and it is hoped that the performance of the US National Team in South Africa will spur greater interest and growth in the sport.

While Henry is no longer the great footballer when he was with Arsenal or in his second year with Barcelona, this move can be like when Ruud Van Nistelrooy moved to Real Madrid. It rejuvenated his career.

New York Times writer Rob Hughes made mention that Henry, at 33, is at the same age when Pele, Carlos Alberto, and Franz Beckenbauer moved to the NASL to play for the New York Cosmos. And unlike David Beckham, he has different motivations in moving to the United States.

All I can say is, I am going to enjoy this MLS season. And I do hope more Euro footballers make the jump (but not while they are deemed as over the hill).
