Wynne Arboleda suspended for the remainder of the 2009-10 PBA season

Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner Sonny Barrios after meeting with Burger King guard Wynne Arboleda this morning in the league offices in Libis, Quezon City, suspended without pay the player for the rest of the 2009-10 Season following his attack on a fan during his team’s game with Smart Gilas Pilipinas last Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Arboleda, who was assessed two flagrant fouls earlier for elbowing Gilas guard Jayvee Casio in the neck while fighting through a pick and undercutting the nationals’ Mac Baracael on a lay-up, was ejected from the game following his attack on Alain Katigbak who was seated courtside.

The year long suspension will cost Arboleda P2.73 million in lost income for Arboleda. To compound matters for the veteran, he will be further docked Php 20,000 for his two flagrant fouls penalty 1 and serve out a one-game suspension during Burger King’s match versus San Miguel this coming Wednesday.

Wrote Barrios, “As we pointed out to you, even granting that said fan was foul-mouthed and verbally abusive as confirmed by reports to us, there is a “line” that a PBA player cannot and should not cross: to physically harm a fan. Your serious breach of this “line” at this time and in the manner described herein endangers the PBA as being perceived by the public as unwholesome and not deserving of fan support.”

Any repeat of the same or similar act will result in a lifetime ban from the league.
