Barangay Ginebra won its first meeting with rival Purefoods 95-87 with superb play by Ronald Tubid in the endgame. In addition to his late game heroics he helped put the clamps on Kerby Raymundo who was bothered by the physical defense on him.
Ginebra at times looked to have no flow to their game as point guard Jayjay Helterbrand launched shot after shot. He did hit a crucial three-pointer when the TJ Giants were threatening to take over the game after coming back from a double digit deficit. But their game lacked fluidity. I'd also give some credit to Purefoods for disrupting their foes attack but much of it has to be leveled at the Gin Kings' guards.
Am not sure if all that talk of losing Eric Menk to a toe injury told on Ginebra's lack of size. Rebounding and defense is all about desire. One good game by Menk doesn't necessarily mean that his once dominant self is back. Because looking at the other team, Rafi Reaves was invisible. Maybe after a few games then we can come to that conclusion.
