Time to Make Some Music in the Sky, Kiko.

For one year, we ran with the same circle of friends. There were were joined by a mutual love of comics books and music. There was Francis Magalona, Michael V (who wasn't a household name yet), Rolly Manlapaz (yes the UAAP & PBA barker), Gerry Alanguilan (of Wasted fame), and a bunch of other guys. We planned on doing our own comics and stories... it was cool and we had fun times until other pursuits got in the way. I still have all the stories and artwork we did. Maybe someday it will see the light of day.

I'm not going to even claim that we were bosom buddies. No, he had a circle of friends he ran around with some of who were my classmates in Ateneo. But we were friends.

We used to go visit Francis and Rolly when they were DJing at Broadcast City. And on a few occasions, they would hang out at home where we'd talk music, comics, and watch the latest anime.

One night after a rough patch at his home, Francis came over at the house and stayed there until the storm passed. I showed him my burgeoning CD collection and he was impressed. I eventually completed my FrancisM discography. He laughed and said he never figured me for a fan (this being the era of grunge).

This was also the time my brother's band won a Battle of the Bands competition in UP and they were already playing in Club Dredd. So it was a wild and crazy time for all of us. We partied hard too.

The last time I saw Francis was at Mega Mall before his illness first struck. We chatted over a few newly released CDs. "Still ever the music fan," he said.

"And I'm waiting for the next album, dude," I replied. He laughed. The last exchange we had.

Before that we met up at Eat Bulaga when I brought over Brian Viloria for a guest spot on the noontime show. And we snapped up this pic that I posted above.

Some friends texted me today about Francis passing away. Friends who ran in that same pack when comics was king and music tugged away at our hearts. Ironically, it was just last week that I uploaded my FrancisM CDs into my iTunes and iPod. Like I've always said then, it was and will always be the work of pure genius.

Rest in peace, Francis.
