Earlier in the day, I was some of my media friends and football people and we spoke of the day's highly anticipated match between Liverpool and Manchester United. Señor Juan Cutillas said ManU would win. When Cedelf Tupas asked me what I thought the score would be, I said 2-1 LFC.
Well, I got it right. At least until halftime. Liverpool played great football tonight as they won 4-1. Remember earlier in the season, they beat the Red Devils 1-0 in Anfield. When was the last time they swept Manchester United in a year? This was in fact the first time Rafa Benitez came away with 3 points from old Trafford.
After Cristiano Ronaldo gave the home team a 1-nil lead off a penalty that doesn't even look like one -- c'mon, Ji-Sung Park already lost the ball out of bounds when he got hit by Pepe Reina. But it was when Fernando Torres leveled the match with a superb dispatch of his Nemanja Vidic and strike against Edwin Van Der Sar that the complexion of the game changed.
Steven Gerrard's spot kick was solid to give the Reds a 2-1 lead. Another penalty should have been called when Torres was brought down inside the box but referee Alan Wiley did not blow his whistle.
When ManU came out firings in the second half, LFC's defense held (although there were a couple of near fatal mistakes in the defense). But it was Manchester United's defense that seemed in disarray because of the sorties of Torres and Gerrard. Vidic's third foul on Gerrard brought him a red card and Fabio Aurelio's superb spot kick cleared the wall and curled in leaving Van Der Sar watching.
Still later, late sub Andrea Dossena chipped a shot (while Rio Ferdinand was giving chase) over Van Der Sar who strayed from the goal line. Bang 4-1 and Liverpool has their first huge win in Old Trafford since 1936.
So without a doubt, LFC's thrashing of Real Madrid is no fluke. They pulled back three points and are four behind the league leaders and defending champs.
