Rooks

Someone was asking me what IMHO is the best rookie class for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

I'd say it's a toss up between the '74 team of Pons Valdez, Chito Narvasa, Fritz Gaston, and Joy Carpio and the '85 team of Robbie Tanjuatco, Len Mumar, Jun Reyes, Joseph Canlas, Jet Nieto, and Alex Araneta. If Jay Gayoso didn't go to La Salle that year, then he'd make this frosh class the best ever. Easy.

The '74 rooks went on to win two titles and fought for a third and lost. The '85 team eventually helped the Hail Mary Team win two UAAP titles, 1 MMBL title, 1 National UAAP title, and a few others. The '74 rooks had two players go to the PBA where they won titles with Crispa, U-Tex, and Great Taste. The '85 team had three players (including Gayoso) go to the PBA where they also won titles with Alaska and Ginebra.

Honorable Mention:
the '67 Blue Eagles of Chito Afable, Ricky Palou, and company
the '98 squad of Enrico Villanueva and Wesley Gonzales

So the jury's still out on Ryan Buenafe, Nico Salva, Justin Chua, and Vince Burke.
