I'm one of those sports fans who enjoys listening to the broadcasts because of the analysts and color commentators. That's why sometimes I prefer to watch from home because them and instant replay. For the Yankees, I've always enjoyed listening to Bobby Murcer, Phil Rizzuto, Michael Kay, John Flaherty, Paul O'Niell, Ken Singleton, and Suzyn Waldman. Scooter Rizzuto was a treat because as a former all-time Yanks great, his commentary sounded like a fan was let inside the booth! Flaherty and O'Niell had great anecdotes and insights to the Bombers of the last decade of so and it made for great chunks of info.
But Bobby Murcer. I grew up watching those Yankees of the 1970's as they brought back championship glory to New York. He was the only Yankee to play with the great Mickey Mantle and Don Mattingly -- It was crushing to see them lose to the Cincinnati Reds before winning it back-to-back. I still even remember reading the news of the plane crash that killed their captain Thurman Munson after a game in Toronto. After the team buried Munson, they had a game to play against Baltimore. And when I see game footage of that match where Murcer won it for New York 5-4, it makes my hair stand up.
Later still as a broadcaster, he brought some country charm -- after all he was from Oklahoma like Mickey Mantle -- to New York. It was fun and I'm happy that I actually have Yankee games on DVD where Bobby calls it from the booth either with the late Scooter or Ken Singleton.
Bobby Murcer passed away today at the age of 62 after a long bout with cancer. As a devout Yankees fan, this is tough as they lost Phil Rizzuto last year and now Bobby. It doesn't make it any easier that New York has been struggling in Major League Baseball play. I wish I was back in New York.
