Things on my mind

Some items in the footballing world hit me the last few days: Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Cannavaro, Patrick Viera... the list goes on on footballers injured in practice prior to Euro 2008. In the case of Portugal, that's huge because Ronaldo's possible non-inclusion means that they're no longer favorites.

You know what I'm loving on TV now aside from the Sarah Conner Chronicles, American Gladiators, and my favorite channels like Living Asia among many others? It's Friday Night Lights. And Kyle Chandler does good in a tough and demanding role like this. The movie is one of my all-time faves and television series follows suit but has a life of its own. There's something about American football that makes for good drama and storytelling.

People have asked me who I am rooting for in the NBA Finals. The answer is no one. I'm an eastern hoops fan so that would peg the Celtics for me. But I also like Kobe. Yeah, one of the few hardcore Jordanairres to admit so. Mhel Garrido asked me how I see it. So maybe it's like this, Lakers in 6. Celtics in 7.

Everyone pick up a copy of Into Thin Air by John Krakauer. It's about the author's disastrous ascent up Mount Everest in 1996 where eight members of their party died. A fresh batch of paperbacks have been delivered -- as in yesterday -- to Fully Booked. It's a great book about climbing Everest. Man, Leo Oracion. Ya got me into this.

Will be in Kuala Lumpur for four days over the third week of June. Yeah, it's work, but I do have a day to bum around and see the city. Something I haven't done in a decade. That's during Euro 2008.

The Chieffy Caligdong piece has been done for awhile. Just looking at the right time for it. Maybe for the next column. The DLSU Women's Football Team will take a bit more to finish. Sat down with the girls and should find time when they take to the field for real practice with the men's team. Now you should see them women because they play real hard.

Got a Lakers short story about something that began awhile ago. But I guess that's up for Friday also with Business Mirror. Have been extremely busy at work.

So how about Doug Collins going back to the Chicago Bulls? Yes, it will work -- for a year. Then Collins as always will wear down his players. Collins has an astute mind for the game, but has a low EQ (emotional quotient). He cannot be worn down by every loss. Remember his first game with Chicago when he was chewing his gum so hard that it turned to powder and left traces all over his mouth. Said a young Michael Jordan, "Relax. I'm not going to let you lose your first game. Now wipe that gum from your face." Geez!

And there's the firing of Flip Saunders. He's a good coach but it seems that with Minnesota and with Detroit, he couldn't get his team over the hump. Doc Rivers' reaction, "I don't understand it. It makes coaching not fun."
