I've always enjoyed Interleague games because it gives fans the chance to see the home team face squads they probably only will take on if they make it to the World Series. And a vital part of that attraction is the annual outing that is the Subway Series that once more went to the Mets who took the sixth and final game 3-1 to finish 4-2. And the Amazins' Manager Jerry Manuel, gracious in his team's win, said that the Big Apple in Yankee Town and his Mets are second banana.
To be honest, I don't really care for who is top dog in New York because the only team I'm thinking the team should be catching is the Boston Red Sox. Larry Luchino and Theo Epstein have done Boston proud by coming up with competitive and winning teams in Fenway. The Yankees since they signed up Mike Mussina in 2001 have not won the Fall Classic. They've had very good regular seasons but have melted when it meant the most.
I thought they burst out of the gates this year but instead have played .500 ball. Joe Girardi well hasn't exactly impressed but he sure has his ballclub playing much better now. And pitching, the bane of the Yankees since Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson kayoed them in 2004 is still very much the problem. The All Star break is coming up and GM Brian Cashman has to find a way to address this as they head into the second half of the season. The team clearly isn't as productive runs-wise and in the W column as last year yet here's hoping they hit their stride. Here's hoping that Sidney Ponson gets another win which should jumpstart this team.
The Yankees currently have a 44-38 record and are third in the AL East behind Tampa Bay and Boston.
